Hey, gang! I hope you're well.
I think improv scenes should make sense. They're not immune to the rules of storytelling. We want our audience to understand, get onboard and enjoy the worlds we're creating.
When we can't find a game/pattern/or behavior to lock onto that's when we pile absurdity on top of absurdity. And nothing makes sense.
You have other tools, though, to help get you back on track.
Acting tools. Real wants, real relationships, dealing with events as they unfold.
I come from an acting background having taught at West Virginia University for a couple of years as part of my graduate acting training. I'm discovering how real acting beats can inform improv. Being wacky and being real aren't mutually exclusive.
I'm on the faculty at The Pit. I'm finishing up my fifth year as a house team member there. My Monday team- Hero Complex- has been together for almost three years, we exclusively perform the Harold but I can jam with whatever you want to work on.
