Jie Ma

About
I have been studying and then later performing improv since 2019, mostly at Magnet (with some understanding of clown and commedia) and have been on two house teams at Magnet so far. I feel I have an intuitive and instinctive approach to play, and I'm honing the more technical aspects of improv as I mature in my own study.
I bring positive energy and thoughtful observations to coaching, and want to make sure everyone's voices and goals are heard. Trust and a strong sense of psychological safety are foundational for play.
For me teaching is a privilege and a joy. I have taught/led different things throughout my life (including orientations counseling, residence hall assistant, SAT/math/other private tutoring, mandarin at the college level, then mandarin to adults recreationally).
In my own work I enjoy both stylized and emotionally authentic scene work, and would love to explore all the different ways improv can help unleash our unique voices to create vibrant and joyful moments that will never be seen again!
I enjoy giving thoughtful, useful feedback and sharing everything I know in a targeted, not overwhelming way so that each group can benefit from the session fully and have loads of fun doing it. I am most comfortable with the harold, spokane, the onion, slacker, small town, and monoscene. I am excited to explore whatever the group wants to try out!
